The Nun

If you like the Conjuring Franchise (spanning four films so far) or like the adrenaline rush from scares then you will probably like this.

  • Screenplay by Gary Dauberman (IT, Annabelle)
  • Directed by Corin Hardy (The Hallow)
  • Starring Demián Bichir (The Hateful Eight, Savages), Taissa Farmiga (The Bling Ring, Final Girls) and Jonas Bloquet (3 Days to Kill, Elle)
  • Budget of $22m

Initial Thoughts 💭

A highly anticipated film and the latest film from the conjuring universe, The Nun has been built up as one of the scariest films this year. However the film is severely lacking the punch unlike its heavy hitting marketing campaign.

The ‘ccc’ review💭

Going further back in the conjuring history, a priest and a nun in training are sent to investigate a cloister in Romania following a death. Once they arrive, it is clear that there are much darker forces at play which threatens their lives and faith. The newest conjuring film brings a new horror to our screens for more jumps and scares.

It is a crazy thing that people want to spend their evening and hard earnt money to watch a film that will make them jump and scream!! The conjuring franchise so far has delivered and become the highest grossing horror franchise of all time even surpassing the Saw series.

With previous films in the franchise, we all know there is a demon to be revealed. Yet, as with all horrors, the film slowly ratchets up scene by scene, act by act until the evil that is being faced is being shown. However with the Nun, the “horrifying” Nun appears rather early and each time the Nun appears we become less and less distressed.

Perhaps one of the reasons why we don’t rank it as highly as other conjuring films is probably because the main couple, the Warrens, were not in the film ( although Annabelle Creation turned out good). Probably, the main reason is because the legendary James Wan isn’t the director. He knew how to build suspense and has near perfect timing for delivering the scares we all need. Corin Hardy still needs time to hone his skills and maybe a bit unfair to compare him to Wan.

Starring Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story, The Bling Ring) as Sister Irene and Damián Bichir (The Hateful Eight, Alien: Covenant) as Father Burke, they perform adequately along to move the film on but with a predictable story hardly raise the standard. Interesting that Taissa Farmiga is the sister of the lead actress in the conjuring franchise and look alike – yet there doesn’t seem to be any link in the film!

Final Thoughts 💭

The scares just feel a bit too predictable, and in some regard the marketing was scarier than the film. As opposed to Equalizer 2 that was recently reviewed, this did feel like a film was squeezed out for a few dollars more and lack any originality. We will definitely watch the next conjuring films, but the studios will only be able to release films like this so many times before you lose the goodwill of the audience.

Good for a few jump scares (and subsequent laughs) but will hardly have you praying for it to stop 📺👻
